LOCAL A CAPPELLA CHORUS PREPARES FOR INTERNATIONAL
Heads to Providence, R.I. to participate in Harmony, Inc. International Contest
SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, OCTOBER 29, 2016 — Sea Belles Chorus, the Saint John chapter of Harmony, Incorporated, an international organization of female a cappella singers specializing in the barbershop harmony style, is preparing to participate in an upcoming singing competition in Providence, Rhode Island. Sea Belles chorus qualified for a spot at the competition earlier this year after earning a qualifying score at the regional contest, and will go head-to-head with more than twenty four premier choruses from the United States and Canada.
Harmony, Inc. will host its International Convention & Contests from November 2-6, 2016. For more than 50 years, the organization has gathered female singers of all musical backgrounds and experience levels to participate in a series of competitions for quartets and choruses. Participants are adjudicated by a panel of trained judges evaluating categories that encompass what songs the performers elect to sing, the skill with which they sing those songs, and how they present the songs, which can include emotionally connecting with the audience.
“We’re working hard to improve our skills and deliver a moving and entertaining performance to the judges and to an audience of our peers,” says Susan Ingraham, chapter president. “We’ve grown a lot since the spring when we performed in the qualifying competition, and we’re ready to bring this energy and momentum to the international stage in Providence, Rhode Island.”
More than thirty-eight women from throughout the local area will join Sea Belles A Cappella chorus on the international stage, and the performers will be directed by Janet Kidd.
“These women are truly an a cappella team,” says Kidd, who has been directing the chorus since 1993. “We have novice singers shoulder-to-shoulder with experienced musicians and, together, we are working to bring musical excellence to the four-part harmony we sing and to celebrate the barbershop harmony genre.”
The chorus plans to present two songs at the international contest, My Foolish Heart and Alexander’s Ragtime Band. These selections are a small sample of the chorus’s extensive repertoire, which is ideally suited for a wide range of audiences and events.
