    Has anyone been following the Trump, Clinton, Sanders primaries saga that has been going on in the US for the past several months? Sanders maintains that the US electoral system is rigged and corrupt. Million of Americans, the disappearing middle class. are inclined to agree with him.  He seems to think that if an oil company or some other major corporation puts up some big bucks to help a politician get elected that the “contributing company” will come calling later looking for some legislative favours.

    Nah, that could never happen right?.

    On November 19, 1863, standing on the bloodstained battlefield of Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln delivered one of the most significant and best remembered speeches in American history. At the conclusion of the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln stated “that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom…and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” ….and in the year 2016, Bernie Sanders claims that with a political campaign finance system that is corrupt and increasingly controlled by billionaires and special interests, he fears very much that government of the people, by the people, and for the people is beginning to perish in the United States of America.

    Did you know that not one Republican in the US believes there the world is experiencing 2016-06-01_9-38-50 copysevere climate change? That wouldn’t have anything to do with the tens of millions of dollars donated to the Republican Party by oil companies would it?

    Did you know that many major companies, including some in Atlantic Canada,  have a policy that states if you hold a management decision making position and you accept “gifts” from a supplier that accepting those gifts is grounds for dismissal? It would seem that the owners feel that by accepting gifts from a supplier you may be inclined to favour that supplier in your future buying decisions. Who would have thought? But that conflict couldn’t possibly find it’s way into the political world …….could it?

    27 dollars, that is the average amount that millions of Americans have contributed to the Bernie Sanders campaign. He believes that corporations should be prevented from providing tens of millions of dollars to create and elect puppet politicians.

    A little closer to home and on a smaller scale we have a local Councilor beating a similar drum. Councilor Greg Norton made a motion on Monday night. The motion is as follows:

    Unfortunately the motion was tabled which means it probably will find it’s way to file 13. ( the trash can). I see are current Council is off to a a less than impressive and progressive start. The motion clearly points out an unfair advantage as well as a conflict, how difficult would it have been for Common Council to vote and pass the motion?

    Remember?  This Council is, for the most part the very same Council that “approved” tearing down the Reversing Falls tourist bureau before a private citizen Max Kotlowski stepped in and saved it?  Are we in for another four years of a Council with limited vision and courage?

    I would have preferred that Greg Norton’s motion had gone a step further also included the elimination and/or disclosing the source of local campaign funding as well. Do you suppose it might have altered the election results or election results in the future?  Read the book Dark Money and you will see what I mean.
