SAINT JOHN, NB – March 31, 2016 – Sea Belles of Harmony, Inc., Atlantic Canada’s number one ladies’ a cappella chorus, recently held a weekend music retreat. The highlight of the weekend was the presentation of the Barbershopper of the Year Award. This year the award was given to 10 year Harmony, Incorporated member, Bernice Blake-Dibblee, for her many hours assisting with chorus fund raising and coordinating bass section practices as Bass Section Leader.
Funding for the music retreat with Certified Music Judge, coach and chorus director Kathy Greason was provided by Sing Canada Harmony Scholarship Fund. Sing Canada Harmony is a registered Canadian charity that provides financial assistance to deserving Canadians of all ages through scholarships and grants for education and training in vocal music performance, vocal music leadership, conducting/directing, vocal music administration and vocal music composition, arrangement, adjudication and staging.
The recognition award was presented on behalf of the chorus by Margie Fife, last year’s award recipient. In her remarks Fife stated, “There were many deserving gals but this year’s award goes to a very kind and generous lady who always makes time for helping out the chorus and her sisters in harmony.”
“I am so proud to have been chosen Barbershopper of the year,” stated Ms. Blake-Dibblee. “It is very rewarding to contribute to the well being and success of our wonderful chorus. I do not need a formal acknowledgement to compel me to do what I can for my sisters in harmony, yet I am most grateful for this honour. There are so many others deserving of this award so to be chosen for this honour reaffirms the importance of contributing to our successes, ” added Blake.
The weekend retreat was held to prepare for Area 1 Convention and Contest June 2-4, 2016 at Mount Allison University in Sackville. The public is invited to hear choruses and quartets compete from across the Atlantic region. Sea Belles hope to remain Atlantic region’s Number one ladies’ a cappella chorus.
A 51 voice chorus, Sea Belles is a 47 year chapter of Harmony, Inc., a volunteer international, nonprofit and educational organization for women singers. Its purpose is to empower all women through education, friendship and a cappella singing in the barbershop style. Sea Belles welcomes women 14 years and older who love to sing.
